Health insurance and finding a doctor

How Dutch health insurance works and how to register with a GP or dentist.

Health insurance is mandatory

Everyone living or working in the Netherlands must take out basic health insurance (basisverzekering) within four months of arrival. You can choose your insurer and add extra cover if you wish.

Finding a GP and dentist

Your GP (huisarts) is your first point of contact for medical care and refers you to specialists. Register with a practice near your home as soon as you arrive, as some have waiting lists. A dentist is arranged separately.

Steps

1

Choose basic insurance

Compare insurers and take out the basisverzekering.

2

Register with a GP

Find a practice accepting new patients near your address.

3

Arrange a dentist

Register separately with a dental practice.

Good to know: you may be entitled to healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) depending on income.
