Buying a car in the Netherlands

How the process works, what to check and how to buy safely as a newcomer.

New or used?

You can buy from an official dealer, an independent garage or a private seller. A dealer usually offers warranty and a clear history, which is reassuring when you are new to the country.

What to check

The vehicle registration (kentekenbewijs) and that the seller is the registered owner.
The APK (periodic technical inspection) is valid.
Mileage and maintenance history.
Outstanding finance or debts on the car.

The process

Arrange insurance

Car insurance is mandatory. Arrange it before you drive away.

Transfer ownership

Ownership is transferred at a post office point or online with DigiD.

Road tax

You automatically receive road tax (motorrijtuigenbelasting) after the transfer.

Tip: have an independent inspection done before buying a used car.
